Rubio Presses Mexico After U.S. Strike as Sheinbaum Draws a Line on Intervention

Mexico faces U.S. pressure for swift moves against transnational drug networks.

Overview

  • U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Mexico City for his first official visit, meeting President Claudia Sheinbaum after a Caribbean strike that Washington says killed 11 “narcoterrorists” on a boat that departed Venezuela.
  • Washington has deployed seven warships to the Caribbean as it escalates operations against cartels, following a decree authorizing U.S. military use against drug trafficking groups.
  • The State Department says Rubio will seek rapid, decisive actions in Mexico and then Ecuador to dismantle cartels, stop fentanyl trafficking, end illegal immigration, and counter malign Chinese influence.
  • Sheinbaum said any U.S. military action inside Mexico is a red line, called for cooperation between equals, and rejected President Donald Trump’s claim that cartels control the country.
  • Mexico has increased migration enforcement and approved extraditions under tariff pressure, pursued litigation against U.S. gun manufacturers, and taken steps to limit Chinese imports.
