RTL Plans Single Joint F1 Production With Sky After Takeover

The move is intended to cut production costs by ending duplicate crews and harmonizing contracts, with changes to commentator and expert line-ups possible from 2027.

Overview

  • RTL CEO Stephan Schmitter publicly announced on Monday that RTL will combine its Formula 1 broadcasts with Sky into one joint production to eliminate parallel crews and signals.
  • The consolidation is meant to harmonize duplicate contracts and free production resources across sports such as F1 and the Bundesliga, reducing the high recurring costs of producing two separate TV signals.
  • Sky remains the formal German F1 rights holder through the end of 2027, so any joint production must operate within existing contracts and future rights auctions will determine distribution after 2027.
  • RTL is already using sublicensing for selected free-to-air events, for example the DFB-Pokal Hamburg vs. Eintracht Frankfurt match on 27 October, which will be shown in cooperation with Sky Sport.
  • Strong live-sport ratings, highlighted by RTL’s NFL London Game audience figures, underpin the commercial case for consolidation while the fate of individual commentators and experts has not yet been decided.
