RTL Lands DFB-Pokal Free-TV Package as ARD Fee Slips and NFL Audiences Rise

DAZN’s improving finances alongside RTL’s planned Sky takeover point to a reshaping of Germany’s sports-media market.

Overview

  • RTL will show 15 top DFB-Pokal matches free-to-air from 2026/27 through 2029/30 and gains additional highlight rights, joining ARD and ZDF while Sky keeps all matches on pay-TV.
  • According to an epd report cited by DWDL, ARD’s payment for DFB-Pokal rights in the next cycle totals about €107 million, roughly €3 million less than before, with most value attributed to the men’s competition.
  • RTL reports stronger NFL traction in Germany, with the Denver Broncos–New York Jets London game averaging about 550,000 viewers and roughly 10% market share among 14–49s, and a platform-wide reach of 10.62 million in week 39.
  • DAZN cut its 2024 net loss to $877.5 million from $1.37 billion, grew revenue to $3.19 billion, received a further $587 million from Access Industries, and says it is considering a possible IPO.
  • RTL Group CEO Thomas Rabe says the planned acquisition of Sky Deutschland is awaiting regulatory clearance with an expected 2026 close, projecting about 11.5 million DACH subscribers and up to €250 million in annual synergies three years post-deal.
