RTA and Emaar Sign Deal to Expand Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro Station

The upgrade targets a 65% lift to 12,320 passengers per hour to relieve holiday surges after years of steady ridership growth.

Overview

  • Mattar Al Tayer and Mohamed Alabbar signed the implementation agreement on January 15, 2026 during the Dubai World Project Management Forum.
  • The project increases hourly capacity from 7,250 to 12,320 and raises daily handling potential to up to 220,000 passengers, with the station area expanding from 6,700 to 8,500 square metres.
  • Works include enlarged concourse and platform spaces, upgraded entrances and pedestrian bridges, additional escalators and lifts, separated entry and exit gates, more fare gates, expanded retail areas and improved links to other transport modes.
  • RTA cites sustained demand growth, noting the station’s ridership rose from 6.13 million in 2013 to over 10.57 million in 2024, while Dubai Metro carried more than 1.24 million passengers on New Year’s Eve 2026.
  • Separately, Emaar showcased a SOM-designed ‘iconic’ Blue Line station concept near Dubai Creek Tower, reported at 74 metres high with a 2029 opening target and a planned capacity of about 160,000 daily.
