RSF’s 2025 Report Finds 67 Journalists Killed Worldwide, Nearly Half in Gaza

The press-freedom group says many fatalities were deliberate attacks by security forces or criminal groups.

Overview

  • The tally covers Dec. 1, 2024 to Dec. 1, 2025 and follows an upturn from 49 deaths in 2023 to 66 in 2024 and 67 in 2025.
  • RSF reports at least 29 media workers were killed while reporting in the Palestinian territory, calling the Israeli army the worst enemy of journalists.
  • Israel says it targets Hamas and previously asserted Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al‑Sharif was a terrorist, a claim RSF disputed.
  • RSF counts 503 journalists detained in 47 countries, with the highest numbers in China, Russia and Myanmar, plus 135 missing and 20 held hostage.
  • Mexico recorded nine journalist killings in the year, while UNESCO’s separate methodology lists 91 journalist deaths in 2025 globally.
