RSF Claims Seizure of Heglig Oilfield in Kordofan as WHO Reports 114 Dead in Strikes

Control of Heglig threatens the oil lifeline vital to revenues on both sides of the border.

Overview

  • The RSF said it expelled army units from the Heglig site and pledged to secure oil facilities and protect engineering and technical staff.
  • OilPrice, citing Reuters and The New Arab, reported that production stopped and workers and government forces withdrew toward South Sudan to avoid damage.
  • WHO reported that strikes last week hit a kindergarten and the nearby Kalogi Rural Hospital in South Kordofan, killing up to 114 people, including 63 children, and injuring 35.
  • The African Union cited at least 100 fatalities, and a local official said a drone struck the kindergarten, the hospital and rescuers, with blame directed at the RSF.
  • The Heglig field and the pipeline to Port Sudan are key to regional crude exports, and the UN secretary general urged countries with influence to press for an immediate halt to fighting and arms flows.
