RSC Unveils Free Online Shakespeare Curriculum for UK Schools

Backed by a £1m-plus Foyle Foundation grant, the platform uses rehearsal-based lessons to tackle the challenge of teaching Shakespeare’s language.

Overview

  • Macbeth is available at launch, with Romeo and Juliet to follow and two additional plays added each academic year toward a ten-play offering.
  • Each play is structured into eight modules with three lessons that draw on RSC production clips and practical tasks that position pupils as actors, directors and designers.
  • The RSC says access is free for all state and SEND schools, with a goal of 80% of UK secondary schools using the curriculum by the 2029/30 academic year and an estimated reach of about 2 million pupils annually.
  • Development has been supported by approximately £1.06 million from the Foyle Foundation as part of its legacy funding as the charity winds down.
  • Dame Helen Mirren and Sir Ian McKellen endorsed the launch in London, as the RSC continues school pilots and gathers teacher and student feedback to refine the platform.
