Rs 6 Crop Aid in Maharashtra Highlights Token Payouts to Flood-Hit Farmers

Fresh complaints of token insurance payouts highlight a gap in delivery despite Maharashtra's Rs 31,628 crore relief pledge.

Overview

  • Digambar Sudhakar Tangde of Dawarwadi in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar says only Rs 6 was credited to his account for crop losses after the August–September rains.
  • Farmers in Akola reported payouts as low as Rs 3 and Rs 21 under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana and returned the amounts by cheque in protest at the district collector’s office.
  • The latest complaint surfaced during Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray’s tour of Marathwada, where he met farmers affected by the floods.
  • The state announced a Rs 31,628 crore package in October for crop damage, soil erosion, injuries, ex-gratia for bereaved families, and repairs to houses, shops, and cattle sheds.
  • Many growers say assistance has been delayed for about two months and describe the small credits as insulting while renewing calls for a loan waiver.
