- The value of Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation has fallen from Rs 3.56 lakh crore on May 19, 2023 to Rs 5,884 crore as of September 30, 2025.
- This means 98.35% of the notes outstanding at the time of the withdrawal announcement have been returned, according to the RBI.
- The Rs 2,000 denomination remains legal tender despite its withdrawal from issuance in May 2023.
- Exchange of the notes has been available at the RBI’s 19 issue offices since May 19, 2023.
- Since October 9, 2023, RBI issue offices have accepted deposits of these notes into bank accounts, and the public can send them via India Post for credit.
