Royse City Officer Fired After Viral Pool Confrontation

Closure of the internal use-of-force probe resulted in one officer’s firing with criminal referrals sent to the Collin County district attorney.

Overview

  • A video of a disturbance at the Creekside neighborhood pool on Aug. 3 showing officers using force against a woman and her teenage daughter prompted the department to open an internal review.
  • On Aug. 24 the Royse City Police Department said the internal use-of-force probe is closed and that one officer violated departmental standards and has been terminated; the department did not release the officer’s name.
  • Officials found the actions of three other officers were consistent with department policy, but they kept the separate criminal investigation open and referred charges to the Collin County district attorney.
  • The department said the 18-year-old who was arrested at the scene will not be charged while the 35-year-old, Janiaca Wheeler, faces charges of interfering with public duties and resisting arrest, and investigators are trying to identify a person accused of striking an officer.
  • The family says they lawfully live in the neighborhood and had the right to use the pool, and limited public disclosure of video and personnel names has kept calls for accountability and transparency alive as the criminal inquiry continues.
