Royal Mint Launches Freddie Mercury Coin Marking Live Aid’s 40th Anniversary

The release ties a collector launch to fundraising through a gifted gold proof for the Mercury Phoenix Trust.

Overview

  • Coins went on sale on 18 November via the Royal Mint, with entry prices at £18.50 for a brilliant uncirculated £5 coin and £29.50 for a colour variant, and selected pieces available through the Freddie Mercury store.
  • The design shows Mercury mid-performance with his signature, a musical stave around the edge symbolising his four-octave range, and a studded armband edge inspired by his Live Aid outfit, with colour editions highlighting his yellow jacket.
  • The timing also nods to 40 years since Mercury’s 1985 solo album Mr Bad Guy, underscoring the dual milestone being commemorated.
  • Mercury’s sister, Kashmira Bulsara, struck the inaugural coin at the Royal Mint and said the tribute would have meant the world to him.
  • The collection spans multiple proofs, including a 2oz gold proof priced at £9,350 and a 1oz silver proof colour coin at £144.50, and joins the Mint’s Music Legends series that has featured David Bowie, George Michael, Shirley Bassey and Paul McCartney.
