Overview
- More than 200 children have already started lessons in Birtley, Devon, Hull and Birmingham as the rollout begins.
- The partnership aims to reach up to 1,000 youngsters during the school year with free or subsidised courses.
- Packages consist of 10 to 12 sessions delivered through Tom Dean MBE’s swim school and selected certified instructors, focusing on fundamentals and water safety.
- Reported figures show UK child drowning deaths rose from 20 to 41 between 2019/20 and 2022/23, and around one in three pupils leave primary school unable to swim.
- The national push builds on Birtley’s reopened community pool, supported by The Royal Foundation, which has attracted more than 88,000 visits.
