Royal Canadian Legion Names Nancy Payne 2025 National Silver Cross Mother

She will lay the national wreath in Ottawa on Nov. 11, representing bereaved Canadian families.

Overview

  • The Legion selected Payne of Lansdowne, Ontario, for the national role and scheduled a week of remembrance events in Ottawa leading up to Remembrance Day.
  • Her son, Cpl. Randy Joseph Payne, was killed on April 22, 2006, when a G-Wagon struck a roadside bomb near Kandahar Airfield, and three other Canadian soldiers also died in the blast.
  • Cpl. Payne served on a Close Protection team safeguarding senior officers, and Brig.-Gen. David Fraser was not in the vehicle when the attack occurred.
  • Nancy Payne has laid a wreath as a Silver Cross Mother at her local ceremony every year since 2006, and her husband, Dave, served about 30 years in the Canadian Armed Forces.
  • Cpl. Payne left behind a wife and two children, and he was the 15th Canadian fatality in a mission that ultimately claimed 158 soldiers’ lives.
