Rowdy Aguilar Pleads Guilty With Mental Condition in 2021 Killing of Taylorsville Teen

The plea carries a 25-years-to-life term under juvenile rules, with sentencing set for Dec. 5.

Overview

  • Aguilar, 21, admitted in Utah's Third District Court to aggravated murder of 15-year-old Ivan Vetecnik committed in May 2021.
  • Prosecutors accepted a guilty-with-a-mental-condition disposition that recognizes possible mental illness or drug psychosis without limiting the available sentence.
  • As part of the plea deal, charges of obstruction of justice, abuse or desecration of a human body, and escape were dismissed.
  • Investigators cited surveillance video, a bloodstained shirt, DNA on a glove and knife, and a later confession; the medical examiner recorded 26 stab wounds and dismemberment.
  • Because he was 17 at the time, Aguilar will remain in youth secure care until age 25 before transfer to the Utah State Correctional Facility.
