Routine Pediatric Asthma Screening in High-Risk Communities Identifies Undiagnosed Cases

Researchers say a mobile clinic's holistic screen flagged many children by capturing symptoms plus home risks.

Overview

  • In findings presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics conference, authors reported preliminary results pending peer-reviewed publication.
  • The MedStar Health Kids Medical Mobile Clinic used an Asthma Risk and Control Screen to assess 650 children ages two and older during 2021–2024 well-child visits.
  • Among children without a prior asthma diagnosis, 35% had at least one risk factor, and about 24% of those were later diagnosed with asthma, yielding roughly 8% newly identified cases overall.
  • Poor housing conditions were common in the screened population at about 41% overall and rose to about 52% among children who screened positive, with issues such as mold, pests, leaks, and peeling paint reported.
  • The clinic established a home-visiting remediation effort and a medical-legal partnership to address environmental triggers and advocate for safer housing.
