Rotherham Rapist Obaidullah Omari Jailed for 19 Years

The case is part of the NCA’s Operation Stovewood, which has secured convictions across the Rotherham abuse inquiry.

Overview

  • Omari was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court on 4 September after being convicted of three rapes and two indecent assaults against two girls abused in 2003–2004.
  • Jurors heard he gave the 13- and 14-year-old victims alcohol and drugs before attacks at his Eastwood home and in a car.
  • He was cleared of one further count of raping a child under 13, and co-defendant Shafakit Hussain was acquitted of three rape charges related to the second complainant.
  • Both women disclosed the abuse to the National Crime Agency more than two decades later, leading to Omari’s arrest in 2019.
  • Operation Stovewood continues to investigate child sexual exploitation in Rotherham dating from 1997 to 2013, and a victim told the court the trauma has never left her.
