Rosatom Starts Commissioning at Kursk NPP-2 as Officials Outline Conditional 2027 Timeline for Zaporizhzhia Restart

Zaporizhzhia can return to the grid only after security allows extensive preparation work.

Overview

  • Rosatom chief Alexey Likhachev said commissioning operations have begun at Unit 1 of the under-construction Kursk II nuclear plant in Russia’s Kursk region.
  • Ramil Galiev, head of the Zaporizhzhia operating company, said a launch could be feasible by mid‑2027 if hostilities end in the near term.
  • Galiev estimated at least 1.5 years would be needed to ready the reactors for power generation once conditions permit.
  • Required preparations include replenishing the cooling pond, restoring rail access, and transporting materials and equipment.
  • Zaporizhzhia’s first unit was earlier declared technically fit for further operation, but all six units remain in cold shutdown after generation was halted in September 2022.
