Rosatom Begins Fuel Deliveries for Kudankulam Unit 3 in India

The initial shipment is part of a 2024 lifetime supply agreement for Units 3 and 4.

Overview

  • The state-run nuclear corporation confirmed the first consignment for initial loading of the VVER-1000 reactor at Kudankulam’s third unit.
  • A cargo flight delivered fuel assemblies from Rosatom’s Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant, with seven flights planned to complete the core and reserve stock.
  • Unit 3 remains in pre-commissioning, with preparations underway for safety-system tests on an open reactor.
  • The second-phase reactors will run on TVS-2M fuel that enables 18-month operating cycles and fewer refuelling outages.
  • The announcement coincided with Vladimir Putin’s visit to New Delhi for an annual bilateral summit.
