Cristiano Ronaldo, currently playing for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, has claimed that the Saudi league is superior to France's Ligue 1. This statement has sparked controversy and debate among football fans and professionals.
Lille's Portuguese coach Paulo Fonseca responded to Ronaldo's comments, stating that he didn't want to waste his time answering them and suggesting that intelligent people would understand why Ronaldo made the statement.
Ronaldo's claim was challenged by sports statistics company Opta, which provided data showing that the French league remains superior. According to Opta's power rankings, no more than five Saudi Pro League teams find a place in the top 24.
Despite the controversy, Ronaldo continues to excel in the Saudi Pro League, having scored 20 goals and provided nine assists in 18 league appearances this season. He was also named the 2023 Best Middle East player at the Globe Soccer Awards.
