Ronald Cornelissen Ordained as Bishop of Groningen-Leeuwarden

The consecration ends a yearlong vacancy for the northern Dutch diocese.

  • Pope Leo XIV named Cornelissen in July to succeed Ron van den Hout, who moved to lead the Diocese of Roermond in 2024.
  • With today’s ordination he formally assumes leadership of the Diocese of Groningen‑Leeuwarden, which covers areas including Drenthe and Friesland.
  • Cornelissen, 60, has been a priest since 1996 and previously served as vicar of the Deventer vicariate, leading parishes and organizing pilgrimages.
