Rome Sets 30 km/h Limit for Historic Center Pending September Sign-Off

Officials say the measure responds to a road-safety emergency.

Overview

  • City hall has approved the ‘zona 30’ plan in a delibera, with final signatures expected in September before enforcement begins.
  • The rollout starts with 52 street segments by the end of summer and is slated to expand to roughly 1,000 local roads, including areas within the central ZTL and in Trastevere, Testaccio and San Lorenzo.
  • Enforcement will expand with 60 additional devices between fixed speed cameras and tutor systems, alongside 20 mobile units already used by the Polizia Locale.
  • From September, targeted checks will cover both directions of the Tangenziale Est at Campi Sportivi, add two speed cameras on Via Isacco Newton and activate the long-planned tutor on Via del Mare.
  • Red-light enforcement will widen with 15 more Vista Red systems by November, complementing 11 already installed, while safety works have been completed at several high-risk junctions on Via Cristoforo Colombo.
