Rome Lowers Speed Limit to 30 km/h Across Historic Center Starting Jan. 15

City officials say the lower limit targets fewer crashes through new crossings, enforcement cameras, traffic-calming.

Overview

  • The new cap covers more than 1,000 streets and extends to all areas within the central ZTL.
  • Major arteries such as Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Via del Teatro di Marcello and Via del Traforo are included.
  • The rollout follows an August announcement and a November council approval, building on 30 km/h rules already in about 40% of the center.
  • The city plans 175 raised pedestrian crossings, 40 Photored intersection systems, five new speed cameras on Via Cristoforo Colombo, and additional school streets.
  • Officials point to outcomes in other Italian cities, with Bologna reporting a 13.1% drop in accidents in the first year of its project.
