Rome Leads Italy in Sharing-Mobility Trips as 2024 Data Show Milan’s Larger Fleet

A new national report projects more trips next year despite a shrinking fleet.

Overview

  • Rome recorded 13.2 million sharing rentals in 2024, ahead of Milan’s 12.6 million, with the two cities accounting for about half of roughly 50 million trips nationwide.
  • Milan fields the bigger overall fleet, with more e-bikes (about 10,000 vs 7,000 in Rome), mopeds (1,836 vs 1,156) and cars (3,293 vs 2,158), while Rome leads in e-scooters with 13,500 units.
  • The 2025 outlook points to about 20% more rentals than 2024 but over 4,000 fewer vehicles, driven by declines in e-scooters (−6%) and cars (−17%), after operators fell to 35 in 2024 from 44 in 2022.
  • Usage remains highly concentrated, with 90% of trips in ten cities including Rome, Milan, Turin, Bologna, Florence, Palermo, Bari, Padua, Pisa and Rimini.
  • Bologna and Florence posted the fastest volume gains last year and, with Pisa, lead for rentals per resident as officials emphasize tighter integration with public transport and target new funding to expand access.
