Romania Reports Drone Incursion as Poland Approves NATO Reinforcements

NATO reinforcement follows Romania's disclosure of a breach with the origin of Polish drones still disputed.

Overview

  • Romania’s defense ministry said an Iran-designed Geran-type UAV used by Russia entered Romanian airspace on September 13 at 18:05, was tracked for about 50 minutes, and was escorted by F-16s that did not fire after assessing risks to civilians.
  • German Eurofighter Typhoons supported the Romanian patrol, and local media later reported debris found in the Kiliya area, which authorities have not conclusively attributed.
  • Polish President Karol Nawrocki signed consent for additional allied troops to deploy in Poland under NATO’s Eastern Sentry operation, with specifics classified.
  • Poland has not presented proof that drones that crossed its border were Russian, Russia denies planning strikes on Polish territory, and Belarus says it notified neighbors and tracked stray UAVs.
  • Polish foreign minister Radosław Sikorski said a no-fly zone over Ukraine is worth considering only with allies, as Russia and Belarus conduct the Zapad-2025 drills focused on air defense and force coordination.
