Romania Reports Drone Breach as NATO Launches ‘Eastern Watch’ to Reinforce Eastern Flank

The moves reflect rising concern over allied territory following consecutive drone incursions.

Overview

  • Romania’s defense ministry said two F-16s scrambled on Sept. 13 after a Russian drone crossed into its airspace near the Ukraine border before turning back, adding there was no immediate threat to public safety.
  • President Volodymyr Zelensky said the drone penetrated roughly 10 kilometers into Romanian airspace and remained there for about 50 minutes, calling the breach intentional.
  • NATO announced the Eastern Watch posture on Sept. 12, with members reinforcing air policing through fighter deployments, AWACS surveillance and naval assets on the alliance’s eastern flank.
  • Poland previously reported 19 Russian-origin drones entering its airspace on Sept. 9–10, with at least three shot down, property damage recorded and no injuries.
  • The UN Security Council held an emergency session where Western members condemned the incursions and the U.S. vowed to defend every inch of NATO territory, as Russia denied violations and began joint drills with Belarus.
