Roland Emmerich Turns 70 as ARD Documentary Debuts

The filmmaker recounts brain tumors alongside a bogus leukemia diagnosis, crediting work as his lifeline.

Overview

  • The biographical film Meister der Apokalypse – Roland Emmerich is now streaming in the ARD Mediathek and will air on Das Erste on November 10 to mark his 70th birthday.
  • Directed by longtime biographer Jo Müller, the documentary draws on decades of archival material, shows his Los Angeles homes, and traces his rise with blockbusters such as Independence Day, Godzilla and The Day After Tomorrow.
  • In new interviews, Emmerich details multiple health crises, including brain tumors in 2001 and later years, a removed kidney tumor, a prostate issue treated with a laser, and a false leukemia diagnosis from a man he says was not a real doctor.
  • He says staying on set—especially during The Day After Tomorrow—kept him alive, and he intends to keep making films, with a possible sequel to that movie under consideration.
  • Beyond the TV release, a major retrospective titled Dreamworld – The Vision of Roland Emmerich is scheduled at Neues Kunstmuseum Tübingen starting February 15, 2026.
