ROK–U.S. Engineers Build Combined Floating Bridge for Ulchi Freedom Shield Crossing

The crossing showcased improved interoperability across equipment, logistics and maintenance.

Overview

  • U.S. and Republic of Korea engineer units completed a successful wet-gap river crossing on Aug. 27 near Yeoju-si during the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise.
  • Troops connected ROK KM3 amphibious bridge sections with the U.S. Improved Ribbon Bridge to form a floating span that enabled a maneuver force to cross.
  • Leaders reported gains in combined command-and-control and executed the exercise’s first combined maintenance training, citing concrete improvements in cooperation.
  • Engineers graded roads, moved heavy equipment and assembled bridge sections with boats in what participants called one of the exercise’s largest logistical efforts.
  • Soldiers exchanged tactics and learned to operate each other’s systems, reinforcing trust across units including the ROKA 312th Wet Gap Battalion and the U.S. 11th Engineer Battalion and 814th Multi-Role Bridge Company.
