Rohit Sharma is expected to lead Team India in the 2024 T20 World Cup, according to former Indian chief selector Kris Srikkanth. Sharma has returned to the T20I squad after a 14-month absence and will captain the team in the upcoming series against Afghanistan.
Sharma and Virat Kohli have both returned to India's T20 squad for the series against Afghanistan, sparking speculation about their future in the format. Both players have not played T20 Internationals since India's defeat to England in the semi-finals of the World Cup in Australia in November 2022.
Hardik Pandya, who was the regular skipper of the T20I side in Sharma's absence, and Suryakumar Yadav, who took over in the previous two series due to Pandya's injury, will miss the Afghanistan T20Is as they recover from their injuries.
Sharma has an impressive record as Indian T20I captain, with 39 wins in 51 matches at a winning percentage of over 76. He is yet to win an ICC title as Indian captain, despite winning the 2007 T20 World Cup as a player and five IPL titles as skipper.
The T20I series against Afghanistan will be India's last before the World Cup, which takes place right after the IPL. The performance during the IPL will be a key factor in the final selection for the T20 World Cup team.
