Overview
- Starting January 17, 2027, Rogers will apply a 1.6% credit-card processing charge to Rogers and Fido bills for payments made with credit cards.
- The fee does not apply in Quebec and excludes certain specialized plans and account types, and customers can avoid the charge by using debit, pre-authorized debit, online banking, cheques, Rogers gift or prepaid cards, Debit Mastercard or Visa Debit.
- Rogers says its card-processing costs have risen about 40% since 2020 and that it pays roughly $150 million a year in those fees, and the company describes the charge as a cost-recovery measure.
- The surcharge will reduce the net benefit of credit-card rewards on Rogers spending, including changes Rogers has made to its own bank-card rewards that narrow the payoff for paying by card.
- The move follows a 2022 change that let merchants outside Quebec add surcharges and recalls a similar rollout and reversal by Telus, a history that could invite customer backlash or regulatory scrutiny under FCAC guidance that caps surcharges at 2.4% and requires disclosure.
