Rodney Johnston Jailed for Life for Decades of Coercive Sexual Abuse

Norfolk Police have opened a new phase to identify other men who may be prosecuted.

Overview

  • Norwich Crown Court handed the 67-year-old a life sentence with a minimum term of 16 years, with a lifetime licence, sex offenders register listing and an indefinite restraining order if he is ever released.
  • Johnston was convicted of procuring sexual intercourse by threats, causing sexual activity without consent and intimidating a witness, while a separate rape charge remains on file after jurors could not reach a verdict.
  • Detectives recovered about 30,000 images and videos and said Johnston used adult social networks and bulk text messages to arrange encounters in hotels and secluded locations.
  • The offending spanned 1994 to 2024 and involved a very large number of men, with the court hearing it could be as many as 1,000.
  • Police said their focus now shifts to establishing whether further offences were committed and to identifying men who could face charges.
