Rockslide Shuts Panamericana Sur at Atico as Passengers Cross on Foot

Authorities are deploying heavier machinery to a 20–30 meter blockage after initial clearance efforts made little progress.

Overview

  • Both lanes at kilometer 732 near Atico–Ocoña have been fully blocked since Friday afternoon, when large rocks fell onto the Panamericana Sur around 3:50 p.m.
  • Police remain on site to manage safety and traffic, with the Atico toll restricting southbound passage and nearby police stations alerted.
  • Provías Nacional crews began clearing the road, but progress has been minimal because the available equipment is undersized for the large rock blocks.
  • Heavier machinery from the Municipalidad Provincial de Caravelí was dispatched for midday to speed removal, and authorities worked to open a lane so the equipment can reach the site.
  • Dozens of stranded passengers have risked walking across the unstable area after more than 15 hours of delay, while buses and freight trucks wait, and police warned the shutdown could exceed two days; a similar slide occurred earlier this week.
