Rockfall Hits Car on RN205 Near Chamonix, Killing Two as Route Partially Reopens

Two rear passengers in their twenties were killed, leaving the driver and front passenger injured.

Overview

  • At about 18:00 on August 20, a block fell at kilometer point 17 between Chamonix and Passy, striking a private car carrying four people.
  • The deceased were the rear-seat occupants, while the 54-year-old driver and front passenger were hospitalized in Annecy and Sallanches.
  • The family, from Oisemont and vacationing in Combloux, was returning from the Parc Animalier de Merlet, and an inquiry into the cause has been opened by the Bonneville prosecutor’s office.
  • Emergency operations deployed 36 firefighters and around 21 police officers, and technical services flagged the source slope as unstable during securing work.
  • Traffic on the RN205 was initially halted downhill toward Passy before reopening in both directions via the Égratz viaduct late Wednesday, and the Mont Blanc Tunnel resumed heavy-truck crossings from Italy at 22:30, though the crash site remains sealed.
