Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Installed, Marking Start of NYC Holiday Season

Donated by East Greenbush homeowner Judy Russ, the 75-foot spruce now enters weeks of preparation for the December 3 lighting.

Overview

  • Workers hoisted the roughly 11-ton Norwegian spruce into place at 30 Rockefeller Plaza overlooking the skating rink.
  • Crews will add more than 50,000 multicolored LED lights and top the tree with a Swarovski star weighing about 900 pounds.
  • The live lighting ceremony is set for December 3 with Reba McEntire presenting, and the display will remain through mid-January.
  • The tree traveled about 150 miles from East Greenbush after being felled earlier in the week for transport to Manhattan.
  • After the season ends, the tree will be milled into lumber for Habitat for Humanity housing projects.
