Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree En Route to NYC for Saturday Arrival and Public Viewing

Donated by the Russ family in East Greenbush, the spruce will be repurposed into Habitat for Humanity lumber after the season.

Overview

  • The 75-foot, 11-ton Norway spruce was cut down Nov. 6 in East Greenbush and loaded onto a 100-foot trailer for its roughly 150-mile trip to Manhattan.
  • Rockefeller Center will raise the tree on Saturday, Nov. 8, during a free Meet the Tree event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with advance signup encouraged.
  • The Dec. 3 lighting will feature about 50,000 multicolored LED lights and a 900-pound Swarovski star during a live television broadcast.
  • The live broadcast is reported to be hosted by Reba McEntire, according to the Associated Press.
  • The tree was donated by Judy Russ, whose late husband's great-grandparents planted it in the 1920s, turning a family landmark into a national seasonal symbol.
