Roblox to Require Facial Age Verification for Chat With Global Rollout Starting January 2026

The company says selfie-based checks run by third-party provider Persona will gate chat by age groups to curb adult–minor contact.

Overview

  • Mandatory checks begin in early December in Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands, with worldwide enforcement slated for January 2026.
  • Chat and certain social features will be unavailable unless users verify their age, though playing experiences will remain accessible without verification.
  • Users will be placed into six age bands, and communications will be limited to the same or adjacent groups to block unauthorized adult–minor interactions.
  • For children under nine, in-experience chat will be off by default unless a parent or guardian enables it after verification, and off-platform chat stays restricted for those under 13.
  • Roblox says Persona estimates age from a selfie or ID and deletes images after processing, and the policy follows sustained safety criticism, lawsuits by state attorneys general, and school bans in Argentina as part of more than 145 recent safety initiatives.
