Roblox to Require Age Verification for Chat, Rolling Out in December and Globally by January

Players verify with an ID or AI video selfie to be placed in age bands that curb contact between minors and unknown adults.

Overview

  • Voluntary age checks open today, with enforcement in Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands in the first week of December and a global requirement for chat by early January 2026.
  • Chat and private messaging will be gated by verification while unverified users can still play games and use non‑communication features.
  • After verification, users are assigned to six groups (under 9; 9–12; 13–15; 16–17; 18–20; 21+), and younger users can only chat with peers in their group or nearby ranges.
  • Age estimation is processed in‑app by vendor Persona, with Roblox saying selfies are deleted after processing, while separate reporting has flagged trial error rates for teens and short‑term ID image retention for fraud checks.
  • Roblox is also launching a Safety Center with parental controls as lawsuits from state attorneys general and families keep pressure on the company over child protection.
