Roblox Rolls Out Mandatory Global Age Checks for Chat

The policy gates communications via facial age estimation or ID checks, with users sorted into age bands.

Overview

  • Starting January 7, users must complete an age check to access chat in all regions where chat is available, while gameplay without chat remains open.
  • The system uses on-device camera facial age estimation processed by Persona, which deletes images after processing, and users 13 or older may choose ID verification.
  • After verification, users are placed into six age groups and can chat only within their own and adjacent bands, with chat off by default for under‑9 users unless a parent approves.
  • Users can appeal incorrect estimates or update ages through parental controls, Roblox may prompt rechecks based on behavior, and verified teens can use Trusted Connections to chat with known contacts beyond default limits.
  • Pilots in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands saw over half of daily users verify and Roblox says tens of millions have completed checks, as legal actions over child safety and privacy concerns continue.
