Roblox Agrees to Australian eSafety Demands to Curb Grooming

The platform faces December compliance under mandatory codes with fines up to A$49.5 million.

Overview

  • Under the agreement, all accounts for users under 16 in Australia will be private by default and adults will be blocked from contacting them without verified parental consent.
  • Direct chat will be switched off locally until a user’s age is estimated or verified, and voice chat between adults and 13–15-year-olds will be prohibited with existing bans for under-13s unchanged.
  • Roblox says it will deploy age verification on communication features globally by the end of the year to limit adult–child contact.
  • The eSafety Commissioner will monitor delivery against Australia’s new industry codes and can seek penalties of up to A$49.5 million for non-compliance after the December deadline.
  • Regulators cite documented grooming and sexualised conduct on the platform, while a Louisiana wrongful‑death lawsuit in the United States continues to increase legal pressure.
