Roadpol Crackdown Finds Hundreds Using Phones in Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate

Interior ministries call distraction a serious crash risk, citing Vision Zero.

Overview

  • Hesse police checked 5,667 vehicles during the 6–12 October campaign and recorded 357 violations for using mobile phones at the wheel, plus six cases involving other devices.
  • Rhineland-Palatinate officers inspected 3,384 vehicles and logged 490 distraction offenses centered on phone use, while also noting 280 seatbelt breaches, 13 arrests and two human-smuggling cases.
  • Rhineland-Palatinate is testing the Monocam system that can automatically detect distraction offenses, using a device on loan from the Dutch police.
  • Hesse scheduled further themed enforcement weeks this year, targeting trucks and buses on 17–23 November and alcohol and drugs on 15–21 December.
  • Saxony-Anhalt reported more than 150 illegal uses of electronic devices from over 12,000 checks, along with over 60 seatbelt violations, six drug finds and nine wanted persons.
