Overview

  • Two Kynance Cove Café workers, Rudy and Chris Betty, used paddleboards to bring two adults and three children to safety before lifeboat crews arrived.
  • The Lizard lifeboat launched about ten minutes after a 6pm callout and found the family ashore with their dog, Otis, stranded on rocks at Asparagus Island.
  • With seas too rough for the main boat to approach, crew deployed a Y-boat, and James Thirlaway-Price lassoed Otis, nudged him into the water, and guided him alongside for transfer to RNLB Rose.
  • The lifeboat returned to station at 7:19pm, Otis was reunited with his owners and taken for a vet check, and he is reported to be doing well.
  • The RNLI thanked the café staff and urged visitors to heed tide signage and local advice as Falmouth coastguard handled 38 incidents that day during strong spring-tide swells.
