RNLI Issues Urgent Winter-Swim Warning as Two From Christmas Day Incident Remain Missing

Several New Year dips will go ahead under tighter safety rules following the Budleigh Salterton incident.

Overview

  • Devon & Cornwall Police say 63-year-old Matthew Upham and a man in his 40s are still missing after reportedly entering the sea to help a woman at Budleigh Salterton on Christmas Day.
  • The RNLI cautioned that cold-water shock is a major risk at 15C and below, with current UK and Ireland sea temperatures typically 6C to 10C.
  • Officials urged swimmers to check conditions, understand personal limits, avoid going alone, wear a wetsuit and bright cap, use a tow float, and stay in their depth.
  • Members of the public are advised to call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard rather than attempt rescues, and to carry a phone in a waterproof pouch with a whistle.
  • Organisers confirmed the Westward Ho! fancy-dress dip and Salford Quays New Year's Day swim will proceed with lifeguards, medical teams, safety craft, contained swim courses, compulsory tow floats, and on-land reheat facilities.
