RNLI Issues New Year Swim Safety Alert After Devon Christmas Day Disappearances

The charity warns that sub-15C seas pose a serious cold-water shock risk for planned festive dips.

Overview

  • The RNLI cautioned that water at 15C or below heightens the danger of cold-water shock, with UK and Ireland seas currently averaging 6–10C.
  • The warning follows the Budleigh Salterton incident where Matthew Upham, 63, and a man in his 40s went missing after entering rough water to help a woman, as others were rescued and assessed by medics.
  • Advice for participants includes joining well-organised events, avoiding solo swims, staying within depth, wearing a wetsuit with a bright cap and tow float, and carrying a means to call for help.
  • Bystanders are urged not to attempt in-water rescues and to call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard if someone is in difficulty.
  • Organised New Year swims are set to proceed with added safeguards such as RNLI-qualified lifeguards, medical teams, contained courses, compulsory tow floats and reheat facilities, after some holiday swims were earlier cancelled under a Met Office wind warning.
