RN-Backed Votes Hand Socle Commun Control of Assembly Commissions as Lecornu Drops 49.3 and Courts Support

The Prime Minister opens talks with the PS then the RN today to secure votes for his government.

Overview

  • With RN support, the socle commun reclaimed every permanent commission presidency except Finance, which remains chaired by LFI’s Éric Coquerel.
  • The RN rejoined the Assembly Bureau with two vice presidencies and two secretaries, shifting the balance away from the left to a proportional split of nine socle commun, five RN and allies, seven left, and one Liot.
  • RN leaders declined to run for commission presidencies and voted for socle commun nominees, a tactic that also yielded vice presidencies in commissions for the far-right party.
  • Key appointments included LR’s Alexandre Portier to Culture, macronist Stéphane Travert to Economic Affairs, and LR’s Philippe Juvin as rapporteur general of the budget, while Thibault Bazin kept the social security budget brief.
  • Sébastien Lecornu said he will not use Article 49.3, is receiving Marine Le Pen and Olivier Faure today, and faces uncertainty as LR signals its participation in a future government is not assured, leaving passage of the 2026 budget fragile.
