Overview
- According to the RKI, 44.2% of men and 21.4% of women consume alcohol at levels associated with moderate or high risk of disease.
- Under the DGE model, three to six drinks per week count as moderate risk and seven or more as high risk, with one to two labeled low risk and only abstinence risk-free.
- Only 21.2% of adults report no alcohol use, including 16.7% of men and 25.3% of women.
- Risky patterns are more common in higher education groups: 54.5% of men and 32.4% of women meet the moderate/high-risk threshold versus 38.0% and 12.5% in low education groups.
- The findings re-evaluate a 2019–2020 telephone survey of 22,708 adults using the new thresholds, and the RKI urges advertising bans, higher taxes and limits on availability to reduce consumption.
