Rivian Acquires Third Dimension to Build Real‑World 3D Simulator

The company says the purchase will give it an in‑house way to turn real driving imagery into lifelike test worlds to speed training and validation of its driver assistance and robotaxi systems.

Overview

  • Rivian confirmed this week that it has acquired UK startup Third Dimension and will absorb the roughly 15‑person team into its autonomy and AI organization.
  • Third Dimension’s AI converts images and video into adjustable, photoreal 3D scenes so engineers can replay and vary real driving situations without waiting for rare events to occur.
  • Rivian plans to combine the startup’s simulation tech with its fleet data, which the company says includes more than 400,000 anonymized driving sequences uploaded per day, to train and validate models faster.
  • The company will use the capability across two tracks: improving consumer advanced driver assistance systems and advancing a robotaxi program that Rivian intends to supply to partners such as Uber.
  • Terms were not disclosed, and the buy expands Rivian’s London AI footprint as it follows a wider industry move toward high‑fidelity, data‑driven simulation used by rivals like Waymo and Tesla to close the gap between virtual testing and real roads.
