Rist Tops First Round in Loiret By-Election as RN’s Rabault Advances to Runoff

The runoff carries national stakes given the health minister’s vow to quit if she loses.

Overview

  • Official results put Stéphanie Rist at 33.9% and Tiffanie Rabault at 27.2% after the Jan. 18 first round.
  • Voters return on Jan. 25 for a head-to-head that will decide the Loiret 1st constituency seat.
  • Left and Green candidate Ghislaine Kounowski missed the second round by 11 votes after falling short of the 12.5% of registered-voters threshold, with abstention around 70.6%.
  • The by-election followed Rist’s substitute, Stéphane Chouin, refusing to take her National Assembly seat after her appointment as health minister in October.
  • Rist has pledged to resign from the government if defeated and said she would cede the Assembly seat to new substitute Marie-Philippe Lubet if she wins.
