Riot Buys Rockdale Site and Lands AMD Lease in Pivot to AI Data Centers

The deal signals a shift to contract-backed AI hosting by converting Riot’s Texas power assets into leased data center capacity.

Overview

  • Riot completed a $96 million fee-simple purchase of 200 acres at Rockdale funded entirely by selling about 1,080 bitcoin.
  • AMD signed a 10-year lease for 25 MW of critical IT load valued at $311 million, with phased delivery from January to May 2026.
  • The agreement includes three five-year extension options and expansion rights that could lift total value to roughly $1 billion and capacity to 200 MW.
  • Riot will retrofit an existing building for the initial deployment, budgeting $89.8 million in capex and projecting about $25 million in annual net operating income.
  • The Rockdale site has a 700 MW grid interconnection, and together with Corsicana gives Riot control of roughly 1.7 GW of approved power across more than 1,100 Texas acres, as shares jumped double digits on the news.
