Rio’s Operação Verão Seizes 401 Liquor Bottles and Fines 31 in Weekend Beach Sweep

Authorities are targeting illegal distilled drinks following a suspected methanol poisoning reported in Niterói, with no confirmed cases in Rio.

  • SEOP agents were pelted with stones during a Copacabana inspection as they seized an illegal drink tricycle, leaving one worker injured and one ambulant detained on charges including bodily injury, damage to public property and resistance.
  • Over the weekend, enforcement teams carried out 190 inspections of licensed vendors, issued 31 fines and confiscated 401 bottles of distilled spirits from unlicensed sellers on the sand and promenade.
  • Across the first month of the operation, officials inspected 980 authorized barraqueiros and recorded 160 fines in actions spanning the South and Southwest beachfronts, Ilha do Governador, Paquetá and major parks.
  • Urban-control teams removed hundreds of chairs, tables, grills, coolers and pushcarts, seized 601 sharp objects, eight firearm simulacra and narcotics, and took 18 people to police stations with three arrests.
  • State health authorities are investigating the Niterói methanol case and Rio’s health department reports no confirmed intoxications, as the city urges reports of illegal sellers and depots via the 1746 hotline.
