Rio Replaces 2,042 Street Bins in 2025 as Theft and Vandalism Persist

Officials are moving to nonmetal fixings on future purchases to reduce losses.

Overview

  • Comlurb says the city has about 38,000 small street bins and has installed more than 6,500 new units this year, with annual replacement costs around R$1 million.
  • Copacabana leads bin replacements with 455 cases in 2025, followed by Centro with 303 and Ipanema with 226.
  • After identifying a metal cigarette snuffer as a theft target, new bins are being installed without the piece, though damage continues.
  • Roughly 12,000 larger steel containers are now in place citywide, which the agency says are less targeted by thieves despite isolated fires.
  • Residents report long stretches without bins, improvised disposal and clogged drains after rain, and Comlurb will launch a pamphlet campaign in the coming weeks.
