Rio Releases Full Transit and Security Plan for NFL Game at Maracanã

Officials say the operation adapts past large-event tactics to NFL standards to speed entry, reduce congestion, strengthen safety.

Overview

  • City and state authorities published the complete plan on Monday, Sept. 21, listing metro operating hours, assigned stations for each ticket gate and the 13:25 gate-opening time for the Sept. 27 Ravens‑Cowboys match.
  • Security will be led by the Military Police with coordination from the Batalhão Especializado em Policiamento em Estádios (Bepe), support from BTM and other specialized units, and reinforcement from the Civil Police.
  • Only transparent bags will be allowed inside Maracanã and items banned from entry include glass bottles, sharp objects, fireworks or incendiary materials, firearms, knives and unauthorized marketing materials.
  • Traffic rules include parking restrictions starting at 19:00 on match day that last until two hours after the game ends, street diversions around Maracanã and advice to use metro or urban trains with contactless fare or preloaded Jaé cards.
  • The plan builds on lessons from the World Cup and Olympics and comes as the city stages a week of NFL activations and pursues a multi‑year agreement with the league to draw tourists and boost local businesses.
